WHEN I saw Richard lying there asleep while we’d been kept in

suspense, I became more than a little annoyed and said rather loudly,

“Where have you been? We waited and wondered last night, but you never

showed up.”

Richard roused himself slowly and said finally, “For your

information, I was on the job last night.”

“All night long?”

“Well, not quite all night, but most of it.”

“Can you take it from the beginning? Please?”

“Okay, okay. Don’t get your boxers in a bunch. I went back to the

dyke bar last night, and the missing bartender was back on the job. Her

name, by the way, is Lily Sanders. I showed her the picture Philip gave me

when we were at the house on West Paces Ferry Road, and she

immediately recognized the deceased. More to the point, she clearly

remembers having seen the deceased in that bar on the Saturday before the

killing, and she was with a real bull dyke, one that Lily remembered

seeing her with before on a number of occasions.”

“Did she give you a name?”

“Don’t rush me, I’ll get to it. All she knows the woman by is Ruby.

No last name. Lily promised to make some time available for my sketch

artist on Monday morning—for a fee, of course.”

“Of course. Well, that’s something. It does not, however, explain

why we haven’t heard from you.”
